Maxwell cricket player: RCB buy Glenn Maxwell for INR 14.25 crore; Delhi Capitals pick Steve Smith

RCB buy Glenn Maxwell: The Australian all-rounder continued to mint money in the IPL auction after getting bought for INR 14.25 crore.

Australia batsman Steve Smith will now play for Delhi Capitals in the 14th season of the Indian Premier League. Smith, 31, became the first player to receive a bid in the auction today. Before Smith, the likes of Karun Nair, Alex Hales and Jason Roy had all remained unsold.

Smith, who was among the 10 players with a base price of INR 2 crore, first enticed a bid from Royal Challengers Bangalore. Soon enough, Delhi Capitals entered the frame by increasing the price to INR 2.2 crore.

RCB, who didn’t show any further interest in the former Rajasthan Royals captain, opted out to let Smith go to Delhi Capitals where he will join a star-studded batting lineup comprising of Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis.

The first set of players also witnessed the likes of West Indies batsman Evin Lewis, Australia white-ball captain Aaron Finch and India batsman Hanuma Vihari going unsold in the first round.

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who is fondly known for earning hefty pay cheques from the Indian Premier League, once again ignited a bidding war in the auction.

It was Kolkata Knight Riders who first start bidding for Maxwell but soon went out of the race as RCB and Chennai Super Kings went all out for the right-hand batsman and right-arm spinner.

Not seeming to settle for anything less, both the franchises continued to raise the paddle to an unprecedented level. While Maxwell’s big-hitting ability is well-known, his dismal IPL 2020 form didn’t seem to affect these franchises. After an intense competition, it was the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers who bagged Maxwell for a mammoth INR 14.25 crore.
