R Ashwin 400 wickets: The Indian spinner has become the 16th bowler to cross the 400-wicket mark in Test cricket.

During the second day of the third Test of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Ahmedabad, India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin found England spearhead Jofra Archer (0) wanting in front of the stumps to pick his 400th Test wicket.

It all happened on the second delivery of the 24th over when Archer missed playing a wild sweep off Ashwin. Archer, who was struck well in front of the stumps, opted for a review but even it couldn’t help in surviving at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Ashwin, who had started this Test match with 394 wickets to his name, was mostly expected to reach the 400-wicket mark. Having picked three wickets in the first innings, Ashwin had picked as many wickets in the second one.

Playing his 77th Test match, Ashwin has become the second-fastest bowler to pick 400 Test wickets. It is worth mentioning former Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record with his 400th wicket coming in his 72nd match.

How many Indian bowlers have picked 400 Test wickets?

Ashwin, who has become the 16th bowler to pick 400 Test wickets, is only the fourth Indian bowler to achieve this milestone. Before Ashwin, the likes of Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan Singh (417) had achieved this rare milestone as far as the Indian bowlers are concerned.
