“Michael Jordan took over from the bus driver at 70 miles per hour”: When the Bulls legend broke the law for a bit of fun during his baseball tenure

Michael Jordan once almost committed a crime during his short time in Minor League Baseball while negotiating a favorable contract. 

We all know Michael Jordan as the greatest player to ever grace a basketball court. With 6 championships, 5 MVPs, and 14 All-Star appearances, he has a career that has yet to truly be eclipsed.

What we will be talking about here though, is from a time that the biggest fans of the former player have wanted to forget for the longest time. This incident came during the short span of time that Michael Jordan was not in the NBA but in Minor League Baseball.

As many will know now, Michael Jordan retired for the first time due to the death of his late father. As the story goes, the player’s father always wanted him to be a baseball player. And so, in order to fulfill his wish, the best player in the NBA wanted a career in baseball.

Now, Michael Jordan was Michael Jordan after all. After living the high life and traveling from game to game in luxury, he didn’t want to adjust to the Minor League Baseball’s transportation services. And so, he bought the team a whole new high-end bus, sometimes referred to as the ‘Jordan Cruiser’.

Several years later, Curt Bloom spoke to the White Sox podcast about the bus and admitted to a very dangerous incident taking place.

“For a couple of miles on an open highway, completely open highway, he actually jumped in the driver’s seat and was driving… We made a switch probably going 70 miles an hour, and our bus driver got up and Michael sat in there and went straight. I certainly hope this doesn’t get anybody in trouble. The Department of Transportation, we’re sorry, and the statute of limitations has passed.”

Antoine Walker says that Michael Jordan canceled his press conference announcing his return to the NBA because they were up playing Spades for 36 hours straight…They were down $900,000 at one point. 😂

Laws do differ from state to state on this. But Jordan most likely would have needed a different driving license to drive bigger vehicles. More than that though, switching with the driver while the bus is going at that great a speed?

We’ve all heard what a great gambler ‘His Airness’ was. But perhaps putting his and others’ lives at risk just for a bit of fun perhaps wasn’t the best decision he has ever made.
