"They're the experts" - Aston Martin hints at legal action against FIA for aero rule change

“They’re the experts” – Aston Martin F1 team principal Otmar Szafnauer is unhappy with the aero changes introduced this season, and has hinted at possible legal action against FIA.

The rule change in question has reduced the downforce available to the cars from the rear floor. This in turn is potentially posing problems to teams with low-rake cars, most significantly Mercedes and its customer team Aston Martin.

Otmar Szafnauer is unhappy with this and has let his feelings known to the sports’ official broadcasters Sky Sports. Indirectly hinting at F1 being involved in the regulation change with FIA, he has very indirectly hinted at suing the governing body for Formula 1.

“It’s hard to know the intent. That’s a question for the FIA. The regulation change that was made for safety reasons, that type of governance rests solely with the FIA. They’re the experts.

“The right thing to do is have the discussions with the FIA and find out exactly what happened and why and see if there is something that can be done to make it more equitable.

“I think we get to that point (legal action) after the discussions. It’s hard to predict. The right thing to do is see what can be done.”

FIA not revealing much in response

GPFans Global contacted FIA for a response to the Aston Martin team principal. The spokesperson gave a flat reply to this, in addition to not commenting on the legal action bit.

“It’s normal for the FIA to talk regularly to the teams on a variety of topics relating to the regulations.”
