“Vettel was better than the car”– Former F1 driver Karl Wendlinger was impressed by Sebastian Vettel’s performance with Aston Martin.
Sebastian Vettel‘s start with Aston martin didn’t go well for many reasons, firstly, the car is not as good as it was last season, and secondly, lack of adaptability also gave in poor results.
But Vettel’s race in Monaco was somewhat different, and he brought in a huge number of points with his P5 finish. Former F1 driver Karl Wendlinger is impressed with the German’s performance at Monte Carlo.
“Vettel was very, very good all weekend, better than the car,” he told Sport1’s AvD Motor & Sport magazine. “Vettel is much better able to cope with his car than in the weeks before. So he was able to get a lot out of Monaco.”
Although Wendlinger is afraid to claim that this is a turnaround for Vettel after a disastrous last season at Ferrari and a poor start at Aston Martin, he feels more time is required to judge correctly.
“We’ll see if it’s a turnaround. He felt comfortable for the first time. You have to feel comfortable in the car in order to achieve such a result in Monaco,” he said.
Great expectations
When Vettel signed for Aston Martin, the hierarchy at the team wanted Vettel to make the team more competitive with his experience. However, the car has appeared to have a significant downgrade in capability.
Like Mercedes, they also seem to struggle with the rear and low-rake floor issues. Thus, both Vettel and Lance Stroll are struggling with the car’s setup.
But thanks to Vettel’s impressive finish in Monaco, they managed to be above Alpha Tauri, who have shown a threat to them in midfield, but it is a marginal difference of one point, which can be easily covered.
So, Aston Martin has to improve from here if they managed to be near their last season’s results.
