“I’m the angry one" - Pierre Gasly responds to Lando Norris calling him an idiot during French GP

“I’m the angry one” – Pierre Gasly raced Lando Norris wheel-to-wheel but eventually finished two places below him at the French Grand Prix.

Lando Norris saw red when Pierre Gasly went too close for comfort in a bid to overtake the McLaren. Norris called Gasly an idiot on team radio, but eventually managed to finish the race in P5, two places ahead of Gasly.

The Frenchman was disappointed with losing the battle, but chose to not take Norris’ comment seriously, claiming he would have felt the same.

“I’m the angry one, I finished behind at the end of the race! It was hard racing. I saw him, he was coming very fast, it was close. It was very close. I know he has good reactions, so I kind of knew. I was aiming for a nice exit on the kerbs. I’m sure [the fans] enjoyed it, right? It was mega!

“In the heat of the moment, probably if he would have done the same thing to me I would have told him the same way.”

Gasly helping AlphaTauri lead midfield battle

The Frenchman is having yet another standout season, and finds himself P8 in the drivers’ standings. This is crucial for AlphaTauri for their midfield battle with Aston Martin and Alpine as rookie Yuki Tsunoda hasn’t contributed enough so far.

Gasly is getting used to this, though, considering he did the bulk of the work last season with Daniil Kvyat as his teammate. He was happy with the result, finishing right behind the three giant pairings.

“I need to let the emotions calm down a bit, but still we were the fourth-best car at the end of the race behind the two McLarens, the two Red Bulls and the two Mercedes.

“We can’t expect much more. Daniel [Ricciardo] undercut us, I think Charles [Leclerc] undercut us and we lost two positions there, so we need to review if we could have done something slightly different.”
