“We’ll lock Mike Conley in the house, that’s the plan”: Donovan Mitchell approves hilarious plan to ensure that Utah Jazz can sign All-Star point guard in free agency

Mike Conley was arguably the Utah Jazz’s best player over the course of last season. Donovan Mitchell understandably wants him back on the team.

Mike Conley was the world’s highest-paid basketball player for a brief period in the 2016 offseason. The former Grizzlies star was the first to sign a max contract on the NBA’s raised salary cap for the 2016-17 season.

He was great in Memphis during his first year of the contract, leading them to 7th seed and the playoffs. They were eliminated by the Spurs that year (again), but things looked rosy to start the 2017-18 season till an ACL injury to Conley put paid to their hopes.

This injury forced them to enter rebuilding mode for that year and the one that followed. Luckily for them, they seem to have hit with both of their top-5 picks in 2018 and 2019. Mike Conley, meanwhile, was traded to Utah in the offseason of 2019 to help him contend for a ring.

Conley has been great for the Jazz whenever he’s been fit over the past 2 seasons. His ability to facilitate Rudy Gobert on pick-and-rolls while being a 40% 3-point shooter was a huge bonus.

The Jazz finished with the league’s best record last season. They’ll be hoping to go several steps better in the 2022 postseason after an ignominious exit by the Clippers.

The Utah Jazz have undoubtedly made signing Conley to a new deal a top priority this offseason. But if there was any doubt as to whether they’d do so, Donovan Mitchell cleared it up on Twitter.

The 2-time All-Star responded to a Jazz fan who requested the Spida to keep Mike Conley locked. Mitchell seemed to be thinking on the same lines as the Jazz fan, judging from the response.

Utah undoubtedly needs to make more roster moves in order to strengthen its title pursuit. The team has been notoriously short of good perimeter defenders over the past 2 seasons.
