Bhuvneshwar Kumar reveals the secret to his success
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has come a long way since his advent in international cricket. I still remember his debut match against Pakistan in T20I where he was able to make an experienced Pakistan lineup look completely inept with his perfect seam and swing bowling.
He ended up taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs in his full quota of 4 overs and he hasn’t looked back ever since.
Now he is spearhead of this formidable Indian bowling attack in all 3 formats and a very handy lower order batsman. The boy from Meerut talks about managing his workload and how that has been key to his success in all 3 formats of the game.
“It comes with fitness. It’s not easy playing all three formats, especially on a single tour. So the first thing before coming here what I wanted to do is manage workload. I wanted to practice but in a specific way, so as to not put extra workload on the body. The credit goes to the entire team because individual performances don’t matter.
“We stayed together and that’s what worked. For instance, we didn’t win the first two Tests but from the third Test, the momentum went our way. So it wasn’t about just one person, it’s about each and every player, and the support staff and the management to everyone.”
Bhuvneshwar said after his man-of-the-match performance on Sunday (February 18) with figures of 5/24 in first T20I.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been nothing but sensational for Team India and he has improved a great deal in every department over the years since his debut in Jan-2012.
He has not only shown eagerness to perform consistently on the field but also has the mental awareness to do necessary things off the field, like to be fit, physically and mentally so that he can stay at this level for a long time.
Kumar’s cricketing skills were seen very early in his career when 19 yr old Kumar dismissed great Sachin Tendulkar for duck in a Ranji Trophy final and becoming first bowler to dismiss him for a duck in first class cricket.
Kumar feels fitness and managing workload is as important as working on your skills “It’s about managing the workload. Things have been going good so far, so touch wood two more matches to go and then we’ll see what the body’s saying”.
A wily and slender boy from Meerut is as humble as they come and I can vouch for that. I had honour to meet him at his wedding last year, marrying his boyhood love. Stars are destined to shine and bring joy for others and Kumar has taken responsibility of doing both on his young shoulders.
