The secret behind Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni’s jersey numbers

For some reason, jersey numbers do not hold much value in cricket as they do in other sports. In football for example, jersey numbers hold significant value for club teams, as the Manchester United’s number seven, Liverpool’s number seven, Real Madrid’s number five and Barcelona’s number 10 to name a few are incredibly iconic shirts.

Cricket is yet to start this trend, with only Sachin Tendulakr’s number 10 jersey for India holding some value, as it was retired by the BCCI after the great man left the game.

Among the current crop of Indian cricketers, MS Dhoni’s jersey number seven has become quite famous over the years.

The World Cup winning skipper’s jersey number is symbolic of his love for Manchester United, and his favourite players such as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dhoni’s birthday also falls on 7th July, which another reason why he likes this particular number.

Virat Kohli’s father expired on 18th December 2006, when Kohli was just 18 years old. The Indian skipper has worn that number ever since, as a memory for his late father. It was Kohli senior’s dream to see his son play for India, something that he unfortunately could not see.

Rohit Sharm’s lucky number is 9, but was told against wearing a single digit on his back, which is why his mother picked out the number 45 for his jersey.

Yuvraj Singh wears number 12 on his back, because born on the 12th day of the 12th month in the calendar year. Shikhar Dhawan has the number 25, as he considers it a family number with his wife’s and daughter’s birthdays on 22 and 25th respectively.
