Billy Monger to make racing return at Oulton Park
Billy Monger will be back behind the wheel of a car and racing this weekend, 4 months after the horrendous Formula 4 accident at Donington Park. Following the accident, both of Monger’s legs were amputated.
The 18 year old driver received support from a lot of fans and drivers, with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button being the most famous of them all.
Billy will be racing this weekend in the opening round of the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship at Oulton Park.
He has been spending a lot of time with Carlin, testing and getting back into his grove as a race driver.
“He [Monger] will absolutely be on the grid this weekend.” a Carlin spokesperson said
“It’s absolutely incredible to have him back on the gird. He helps motivate the team, he is competitive as well and has the potential to do a lot more. We want to be able to help him achieve his potential.” he added.
With regards to operating the car and racing with the amputated leg, Billy will be using a paddle on the steering wheel. The right hand would be used for acceleration while the left would be used for upshift and downshift.
It is heartening and encouraging to see the young boy not lose hope after his accident and in fact find more inspiration and motivation to come back and finish what he started.
It will be interesting to see how he performs this weekend, but by the looks of it, he has already emerged as a champion, a champion who will inspire tons of individuals out there to overcome their physical disabilities and chase their dreams.
