Ferrari to have mirrors and new aero structures in Barcelona
Ferrari have had a mixed start to the 2018 F1 season. Vettel seemed like he would be leading the drivers championship by some distance after grabbing pole in Azerbaijan(and leading the race for a long duration).
However, the ‘Red Bull’ crash meant that Vettel found himself ousted from a guaranteed podium in Baku.
Ferrari is now coming up with new halo mounted mirrors for the Spanish Grand Prix if the images doing the rounds on social media are to be believed.
Teams have been given the leeway of installing aerodynamic devices on top of the halo but Ferrari seem to be the first team that are actually doing something of this sort.
Ferrari have already come up with fancy vented wing mirrors and are now doing everything possible to improve the aerodynamics around the new SF71H.
Almost all teams are expecting some big updates before the Spanish GP and this could in fact be the defining moment of this season, as the pecking order could change big time.
Mirrors are allowed to be attached to the halo to improve the driver’s rearward visibility and Ferrari are using that to help improve their race pace.
“I’m sure that when a team comes forward and says we want to mount it [the mirror] here, it is because they feel it’s going to be a bit better aerodynamically, and that includes halo mounting,” said Nikolas Tombazis, FIA’s head of single seater technical matters told Motorsport.com
“It is our responsibility to make sure the rules are specific enough and we hope to make improvements also in the future to make sure the mirrors achieve their real function, which is to be able to see out the back, and to stop them being used for aerodynamic purposes.
“As long as there’s a big device somewhere in the middle of the air, teams will always worry about its aerodynamic effect, so it’s our responsibility to regulate it properly.” he added.
