Mark Wood talks about the person who advised him to leave CSK and IPL mid-way
England pacer Mark Wood was recently in India with his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the ongoing season.
But he left the team midway through the tournament and returned to his nation for playing county cricket to prepare himself for the Test series against Pakistan.
Mark Wood was picked by the franchise for a whopping price of 1.5 crores. It was expected that he would lead the attack for CSK, but after a tough outing against MI, where he conceded 49 runs, he moved to the bottom of the pecking order with respect to seamers and wasn’t getting any game time.
The cricketer recently revealed that the director of England Cricket Board (ECB), Andrew Strauss advised him to return to the nation.
“I’m glad to be back. It was a difficult decision and I was 50-50 whether I leave. Andrew Strauss rang me up and said, if you’re not playing, there’s real value in coming home to push my case and try to keep my spot in the team. I worked so hard trying to get back in the Test side. At the time I wondered whether it was the right decision but as soon as I got back and took some wickets, it was the right decision,” he said, as quoted by Times Now
The Englishmen also expressed his disappointment of not proving his worth in the league and hope to do it next year.
“I would have liked to have played more. It was hard going travelling every day and not playing. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to prove myself in that competition. To have one game and not do well leaves a bit of a sour taste. I’d like to go back and have one more crack at it and prove myself at that standard, which is the best T20 competition in the world”
The right arm pacer has been selected in Test side and is likely to be in Playing XI for the first Test. The test series kicks off from May 25.
