“Just doing nothing”: Glenn Maxwell provides hilarious Injury Update as Melbourne Stars take part in BBL 12 opener

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Melbourne Stars are missing regular captain Glenn Maxwell in the first match of the ongoing 12th season of the Big Bash League at the Manuka Oval tonight. Reduced to 84/5 in the 13th over with batter Joe Burns (18) retiring hurt due to a hamstring injury, Stars haven’t had the best of starts in BBL 2022-23.

Such a situation would’ve been ideal for Maxwell to not only stitch a rescue act but also convert it into an impact-generating finishing act in a T20. Having said that, the 34-year old player doesn’t look like returning to a cricket field in the immediate future.

For those who don’t know, it was after Australia’s elimination from ICC T20 World Cup 2022 that Maxwell broke his leg after slipping during a friend’s birthday party. Although Stars head coach David Hussey had expressed hopes of a return for Maxwell in the time of BBL 12, it will require a miraculous recovery on the part of the swashbuckling batter to partake in this season of the Big Bash League.

Knowing that their fans would be inquiring about the status of Maxwell’s injury, Stars posted a video of Maxwell across their social media accounts before the start of BBL 12 opener on Tuesday.

“Going really well. Sitting here nice with a pack on while the boys get ready. Basically just doing nothing [laughs]. It’s great,” Maxwell said while providing a game-day injury update to his fans.

Spinner Adam Zampa, who had led Stars for the first time during a Big Bash League 2021-22 league match last season, is leading them in place of Maxwell in Canberra. Leading only for the second time in T20s, Zampa has a golden opportunity to put forward his captaincy credentials alongside his primary role of being a wicket-taking spinner.
