When Kevin Pietersen was fined AU$5000 for criticising umpire’s decision during BBL 06

It is safe to say that Kevin Pietersen was the first English player to open the doors for other English players to play in the T20 overseas leagues. He put his name in the IPL 2009 auction despite a lot of backlash along with his all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Both of them got sold for record prices.

Pietersen played in almost every T20 league around the globe and was always a popular figure. He was a regular player in the Big Bash League as well and represented Melbourne Stars in the tournament from BBL 04 to BBL 07. He scored 1110 BBL runs at 37.00 with the help of 10 half-centuries.

Kevin Pietersen was fined heavily during the BBL 2016-2017 semi-final match between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers. Pietersen was representing the Stars and he was wearing a microphone while fielding. The incident happened when Sam Whiteman was declared not out by the umpire.

Pietersen was furious with the call, and he expressed his frustration which was clearly audible. KP was found guilty of breaching the CA’s Code of Conduct Article 2.2.3, and match referee David Talalla proposed a fine for him.

“That was a shocker, an absolute shocker,” Pietersen said.

“He says it could have been glove or pad, and I said, ‘well, he’s got big gloves and big pads to reach that’. Massive nick.”

Perth Scorchers won the match easily in the end by 7 wickets and qualified for the final. Melbourne Stars scored 136-8 in the 1st innings, and the Scorchers chased the target in just 16.5 overs. Shaun Marsh scored a brilliant half-century for Perth, and Whiteman scored 31 runs.
