Dwayne Bravo discloses Super Kings' strength

Dwayne Bravo discloses Super Kings’ strength: The veteran all-rounder opened up on what helps Chennai Super Kings dominate in the IPL.

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is one of the few overseas players to have played each season of the Indian Premier League. After playing for Mumbai Indians in the first three seasons, Bravo has been a regular face at Chennai Super Kings. When CSK was banned for a couple of years, Bravo played under CSK-teammate Suresh Raina for Gujarat Lions.

In what will be his ninth season with the Super Kings, Bravo has given the impression of being ready to go. In a recent interview, Bravo didn’t want to relax on last year’s victory. “Every season is different. This is a new edition and we have come to win. Last year is long gone,” he was quoted as saying by the official website of Chennai Super Kings.

For any cricketer who has played for a team for several years, attachment is bound to happen. Bravo is no different. “Always been exciting coming back here. I’ve had some of my best cricket days at the den,” he said while reflecting on his past years at CSK.

Dwayne Bravo reflects on last year’s victory

Coming on the back of a two-year ban last season, Chennai went on to register their third IPL title. It was a significant achievement for a team which comprised of several players in mid and late 30s. Being tagged as “Dad’s Army”, Super Kings on-field performance stood tall for them eventually.

“We were aware of the name-calling but you can’t beat experience. The way CSK went about picking the squad at the auction – experience along with some talented young players. The core of the team was kept and that made a huge difference. Last year, everyone doubted us and we went on to win the crown,” Bravo answered on being asked about the age of the players last year.

What the franchise is primarily known for is sticking to their core group for years. Considering this to be Super Kings’ strength, Bravo claimed it to be a ‘belief’ and ‘reward’. “Keeping the core group and retaining most of the group has been CSK’s strength over 10 seasons. It’s a belief and a reward at the same time,” the 35-year old added.

Chennai Super Kings are also fondly known for their ardent fan base. When their home matches got transferred to Pune last year, plentiful fans boarded a special train to reach Pune. Highlighting the support which CSK’s players receive from their fans, Bravo believed that it would be difficult for the visitors to beat Chennai in Chennai.

“We have the biggest fan base across the world. Feels great to be in yellow and win games for a city that’s very passionate about cricket. I think our fans have a big part to play. They are very passionate and they keep supporting us. When visiting teams come here, they feel the pressure. It’s not going to be easy to come here and beat us,” Bravo concluded.
