“I had orders from the great Bill Russell”: Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant Squashed Their Beef Thanks to Unlikely Intervention Celtics Legend
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are the two most storied franchises in league history. The rivalry stems not from local proximity, but from proficiency and their legendary success stories. However, things took a slight turn when a Celtic legend helped squash the beef between Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
The list of superstars to have suited up for these two giants of the league is never-ending, but some do hold a special place and even find their names hanging from the rafters in their respective home grounds.
Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant are two such players who held superstar status for the Los Angeles Lakers. While success followed them during their time together in LA, there was a constant power struggle that brewed quite publicly between them.
While such a beef would have been a joyous celebration for any Celtics fan at the time, the greatest Celtic of all time didn’t seem to share this emotion with his fans. According to reports it was Bill Russell, the winner of 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics, who eventually helped Kobe and Shaq bury the hatchet.
Bill Russell “ordered” Shaquille O’Neal to patch things up with Kobe Bryant in 2006.
The late great Boston Celtic was revered by one and all and naturally so. A winner and a social champion, Russell built a reputation that was to be looked at in awe by every single basketball player who followed suit.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 2006, Russell met with the Laker duo before their nationally televised game. And it was then, that “orders” were given to the duo to settle their issues and move on.
“I had orders from the great Bill Russell” revealed O’Neal, when asked about the culmination of his public beef with Bryant.

The advice wasn’t unwarranted either. Russell knew as well as anyone how bitter rivalries can be and how getting over it can lead to pleasant company. The former Celtics star had his own high-profile beef – albeit with an opponent and not a teammate. Russell’s beef with the other towering figure in the NBA at the time, Wilt Chamberlain, was also common news.
And it was what happened after resolving their differences that fed Russell’s advice to Shaq and Kobe.
Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell became close friends who talked on the phone regularly post-retirement.
Only the biggest NBA stars know what they’ve had to endure to reach the heights they conquered. Naturally, there are often more reasons to bond than stay mad at each other – a fact Wilt and Russell figured out post-retirement.
What happened between Wilt and Russell went beyond a mere patch-up too. The duo developed into close friends and would even talk to each other on call around twice a week. After having brawled against each other for years, that must have presented quite a welcome change.
So, from his own personal experience, Russell “ordered” a truce between the superstars of Los Angeles. And the duo complied. After all, who says no to Bill Russell? And this proved to be the beginning of a mature relationship between the stars which seemingly got stronger with time.
Kobe’s untimely passing may have separated the duo again, but their reconciliation was certainly a joyous occasion. One was facilitated by a Boston great to settle the tension in Los Angeles.
