Nick Kyrgios hits three brutal forehands against Wawrinka

Nick Kyrgios made a strong start to his match against Stanislas Wawrinka, but eventually lost in three sets.

Nick Kyrgios, who withdrew last week from the Citi Open in Washington, lost to former World No 3 Stan Wawrinka in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Australian shot to a dominant first set lead by winning it 6-1 but subsequently lost the final two sets 7-5, 7-5.

The World No. 17, who has established himself as one of the rising stars of tennis by plenty of impressive performances, showed glimpses of his best by hitting a few glorious forehands against his Swiss counterpart.

The Australian, coming back from an injury hit 3 brutal forehand winners, all above 180 kmph much to the delight of the spectators.

He has a reputation of being one of the hardest hitters of the tennis ball and has time and again come up with such scintillating forehands against the best players. However, the Swiss was able to get the better of Kyrgios in the match and emerged victorious after an even contest between the two top players.

After the game, Kyrgios applauded his opponent for his impressive performance and said he was happy to see his opponent back. “It’s great to see him back,” Kyrgios said about Wawrinka. When asked whether he had any positives to take from the match, Kyrgios responded negatively.

Wawrinka advanced to the second round to face Marton Fucsovics with a potential third round clash against the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal.

With the US Open just days away, Kyrgios will be desperately looking to recover quickly from the nagging hip injury and find his form back to do well in the last Grand Slam of the year.
