IPL Fine: Who Pays Indian Premier League Match Penalty to the BCCI?

There are two notions/speculations with regard to the fine or penalty amount levied by the BCCI in case players commit an offence during an Indian Premier League match. The much popular one is that the fine is entirely borne by the player who committed the offence, and the other one is that the same is paid in entirety by the player’s franchise. While both the speculations are partially correct, the decision on the same is solely taken by the franchise management.

The discussions on this issue are rife ever since the BCCI fined Lucknow Super Giants mentor Gautam Gambhir and former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli 100% of their match fees after their ugly, verbal fight at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

As per several media reports, the BCCI will levy a sum of INR 1.07 Crore and INR 25 Lakh from Kohli and Gambhir respectively, which is speculated to be their per match fee in IPL 2023. These numbers have been calculated on a pro-rata basis, arrived by dividing their season salary by the total number of league matches (14). Having said that, there is no confirmation by the concerned franchise, or via the BCCI on the amount to be levied.

The bigger question however is, whether or not the players pay the fine money, or is it borne by the franchise concerned, or is it split between the two parties?

Who Pays Indian Premier League Match Penalty to the BCCI?

As per a recent news report by Cricbuzz, a majority of the IPL franchises themselves bear the fine amount of its players, while a few others do charge the same from the concerned player(s). With fines now also imposed on the slow Over rate, some franchises do charge the offence sum from the team captain as well.

While there’s no information as to which franchises pay the entire fine amount themselves and who do not, the report does confirm that RCB and LSG will be bearing the one match fee fine for Kohli and Gambhir respectively.

“Players put their bodies on the line for the team and we respect that and as a culture we don’t cut the fine from their salaries,” an RCB source told Cricbuzz.

Is the fine amount submitted to the BCCI right away?

No. After the end of an IPL season, the BCCI sends the invoices of all the fines to be collected to the franchises concerned, and it is the responsibility of the franchise to submit the amount.

As mentioned above, it is on the franchise to deduct the sum from the concerned player’s salary or not.
