WATCH: Ricciardo’s amazing dummy move to overtake Vettel in Monza
Daniel Ricciardo is known for his supreme overtaking skills, especially when he is coming from the back of the grid or somewhere from the midfield.
All of Ricciardo’s race wins have come when he has started from somewhere on the back of the grid, largely due to his brilliant braking abilities.
In 2014 when Vettel and Ricciardo were teammates at Red Bull, Ricciardo pulled off one of the best dummies in order to overtake Vettel at Monza.
Ricciardo was all the way along side Vettel, then let Vettel off early before going to the other side of Vettel and going late on the brakes.
Now, both the drivers were in the same type of car and hence did not have quite a lot of difference between the car speeds and hence braking skills came to the forefront. Ricciardo, who generally isn’t very aware to taking risks, took one that day as well and completed a sublime overtake.
Now, why don’t we see such overtakes in 2018?
It is largely because of the low downforce levels in 2014, something that helped Ricciardo get past Vettel and not get bogged down due to the dirty air in front of him.
Another reason was because Ricciardo was on fresher tyres, but downforce levels too played a massive role in making it happen(and of course the skill of the driver).
Both Ricciardo and Vettel will now be raring to go in Monza 2018, with life having taken them far apart after times together at Red Bull. Vettel will continue to race for Ferrari, with Ricciardo set to embark on a new journey with Renault.
As far as competing for the world championship is concerned, it doesn’t look like Ricciardo will be able to do it for at least another year. Whereas Vettel should be in line for the 2018 and the 2019 title.
