“Other Drivers Were Mad”: How One Rick Hendrick Call Made Ross Chastain Change His Ways in NASCAR
Ross Chastain has found himself in the crosshairs of various drivers, teams, and even analysts in the wider NASCAR community. His reputation as the ‘wrecking ball’ has been fueled by his controversial on-track antics. His participation in the races seems almost synonymous with ensuing incidents, drawing significant attention toward the Trackhouse Racing driver.
However, it was only a matter of time before Chastain’s on-track behavior started to have repercussions. An admission came during a live interview with Kenny Wallace a few weeks ago, when Chastain candidly shared his thoughts on how his fellow drivers perceived him on the racetrack.
Ross Chastain talks about his reputation in NASCAR
Prior to the Enjoy Illinois 300 race at World Wide Technology Raceway, Ross Chastain took center stage in a live audience interview. The person steering the conversation was none other than former NASCAR driver, Kenny Wallace.
During this live interaction, Chastain admitted, “So on track, I make mistakes. Other drivers were mad I made them uncomfortable probably… Sometimes it’s not exciting for me. I don’t want to be in the middle of all the stuff I have been in.”
Subsequently, the conversation veered toward Wallace himself. Despite expressing his appreciation for the engaging videos Wallace creates, Chastain made it clear he would rather not be the constant topic of discussion.
Chastain explains how it felt when Rick Hendrick wanted to speak with him
There came a turning point in the season when Ross Chastain received a pivotal phone call from Rick Hendrick, the owner of Hendrick Motorsports. This discussion centered on Chastain’s notorious on-track behavior and the resulting impact on the field. Reflecting on that crucial moment, Chastain shared the overwhelming feeling of receiving the call, describing how it left him momentarily breathless.
Chastain confessed, “I saw it and thought… The air couldn’t move. No air went in or out… He talked for about seven or eight minutes and it was great. Some things he was really disappointed, and other things… he was proud of me… It was hard to breathe honestly.”
In the aftermath of this conversation, the Melon Man’s on-track demeanor appears to have transformed significantly. He seems to have renounced his previous antics, with incidents involving him becoming less frequent. Hence, it seems that the discussion with Hendrick proved to be a much-needed intervention, steering Chastain onto a more controlled path in his racing career.
