Racing Only Because of Lawrence Stroll, F1 Expert Reckons Lance Stroll Would Rather Retire and ‘Do Something Else’
Lance Stroll has come under severe pressure recently as he continues to underperform when compared to Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso. The difference between the two drivers is staggering as the Canadian is 102 points behind his teammate in the championship. This has resulted in multiple criticisms and speculations. F1 expert David Croft believes that if the Canadian had a choice, he would rather retire and do something else. Croft’s remarks came shortly after Business F1 put out a report, where they stated that the only reason Lance was still racing in F1 is because of Lawrence’s $100,000,000 investment.
When it comes to Lance’s F1 career so far, he is currently in his seventh season and has just clinched three podiums in his career. Two of his podiums came while racing for Racing Point (one pole) while one came with Williams. In stark contrast, Alonso has already clinched six podiums in this year alone.
As a result, it just shows how much Lance has underperformed this year. Therefore, since Lance is having some real struggles to match Alonso, Croft believes that F1 may not be something that interests the 24-year-old in the first place.
David Croft believes Lance Stroll will retire soon
While speaking on a recent Sky Sports F1 podcast, David Croft explained why he does not believe that Lance Stroll enjoys F1. The 53-year-old began by stating that the Canadian preferred to play tennis when he was younger and that he was also a great talent.
As quoted by gpfans.com, Croft said, “He was a great tennis talent. One of the best talents in Canada at the time. I think he would much rather go doing something else that brings him much more joy and pleasure. Sometimes I look at him and think, ‘You’d much rather do something else, wouldn’t you‘”?
After explaining the same, Croft went to the extent of stating that he does not see Lance racing in F1 beyond 2025. However, it is pertinent to note that the Sky Sports expert is not the only person that believes that Lance does not enjoy F1 as a Business F1 report also suggests the same thing.
As per this report, Lawrence invested a whopping $100,000,000 just to ensure that Lance would pursue racing instead of a career in tennis. Irrespective of why Lance decided to choose racing, it is fair to say that Lawrence’s investments have paid off as his son is currently racing in the pinnacle of motorsports.
Lance’s deficit to Alonso is shocking
Even though Aston Martin at the start of the 2023 season had a car that was capable of fighting for podiums consistently, Lance Stroll has yet failed to secure even one top-three finish. In fact, the only top-five finish that the Canadian has registered this year is a fourth-place finish in Australia.
In stark contrast, Fernando Alonso has managed nine top-five finishes, including six podiums. Considering the huge deficit that Lance finds himself in in comparison to the Spaniard, some experts such as Ralf Schumacher also believe that it is only a matter of time before Lawrence sacks his son.
