Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh are two of the most high-profile players to have been released from their respective IPL sides last week. While Delhi Daredevils parted ways with Gambhir, Kings XI Punjab bid adieu to Yuvraj. Interestingly, both the batsmen started their IPL careers from the teams who have now released them.

Both the batsmen have had a difficult season this year. While Gambhir played only six games before voluntarily keeping himself on the bench, Yuvraj averaged just above 10 in the ten games he played.

We talk to both the players as they react to being released from their sides.

Hello Gautam and Yuvi! How are you both?

Gambhir: I’m quite good, thanks.

Yuvi: I’ve just been released by KXIP. Stuart Broad called me up and challenged me that I can’t hit a six off his ball. How do you think I am?

What did you tell him, Yuvi?

Yuvraj: “Jeez Stuart, I didn’t know you were still playing cricket.”

Haha, that is funny.

Gambhir: Well done Yuvraj. I think I should tweet something to Stuart Broad.

Yuvraj (to Gambhir): Oh no no, Gauti. There’s no need for that. He is active on Instagram nowadays.

Right. Both of you were released from your IPL clubs last week..

Gambhir: I was with Delhi Daredevils for two months this year and after thorough observation, I realized that the team has three major weaknesses. I told the staff to concentrate on them and release me instead.

What are those three weaknesses, Gautam?

Gambhir: Batting, bowling and fielding.

Umm, right. What about you, Yuvi?

Yuvraj: I don’t mind, to be honest. They promoted Axar Patel before me in one of the games.

And then, they released Axar as well..

Yuvraj: Exactly. Now, Ashwin is a good friend, but he’s a bit experimental when it comes to cricket.

He told me, “Yuvi paaji, when Axar gets out, you go next and play right-handed. It adds to unpredictability, just like the time I deceived a batsman by taking a pause in my delivery stride.” I denied and he didn’t talk to me since.

Obviously.

Gambhir: Well done, Yuvraj. I think I should tweet something to Ravichandran Ashwin about this.

Yuvraj (to Gambhir): No no, Gauti. He doesn’t like Twitter.

Why is that?

Gambhir: I’ll tell you why. Because there’s a limit on Twitter. Kuldeep and Chahal have been using it really well, which has infuriated him. Anyway, I’ll deal with him on one of these newspaper columns.

What do you think went wrong in this IPL season?

Gambhir: I didn’t play well because I thought it would work. I scored more runs than Shikhar Dhawan last season, but selectors preferred him instead. This time, I scored lesser than Shikhar – Forget team India, even Delhi Daredevils dropped me to select him.

Yuvi, what’s your take?

Yuvraj: I forgot to laugh at Viru’s joke in the dressing room once.

Oh. How do you look at the next year’s IPL?

Gambhir: Again, I’ll tweet about it.

Yuvraj: I don’t know. If I go to RCB, Virat won’t drop me and we will win the Fair-Play award because RCB usually gives a fair chance to every team. If I go to CSK, Dhoni will drop me again but I might lift the trophy. It’s difficult.
