Alonso tried blackmailing McLaren to ruin Hamilton’s race in 2007
The Hamilton-Alonso pairing for the 2007 season was one that saw quite a bit of drama, with the duo getting involved in multiple incidents on and off the field.
One such off-track incident(which came into being due to an on-track one) happened during the Hungarian GP weekend, when Alonso had reportedly(according to a news report in BBC) asked McLaren to sabotage Hamilton’s race by making him run out of fuel.
It all started during the qualifying session, when Hamilton refused to acknowledge the team’s wish of letting Alonso overtake him.
Alonso did not take it veery well and retaliated by holding Hamilton, for which he received a 5 place grid penalty.
And that was where it all went wrong for McLaren, with this incident sparking up the major controversy of McLaren being thrown out of the constructor’s championship.
Alonso(and his manager) got into a room with McLaren team principal Rod Dennis, asking him to sabotage Hamilton’s race.
The Spaniard blackmailed them to do so else he would reveal how McLaren were using the confidential information that belonged to Ferrari.
Rod Dennis refused to give into the demands of Alonso and instead informed the FIA about the information that Alonso had.
The FIA investigation proved that McLaren infact did have access to confidential Ferrari information and were slapped with a $100 million fine along with being thrown out of the constructor’s championship.
According to Alonso’s agent, Alonso’s demands had come because he was furious with Hamilton and what had transpired during qualifying.
