Allan Border feels Glenn Maxwell: Legendary Australian cricketer was vocal about the Australian all-rounder’s batting position.

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s batting position has become a matter of concern for Australian fans and former cricketers. Maxwell, who has mostly batted in the middle-order was sent in to bat at No. 7 in the third ODI against South Africa at Perth in November.

The next ODI which Australia played was yesterday against India. The 30-year old all-rounder was yet again sent to bat at No. 7 and this despite Australia required quick runs in the last 10 overs.

“If you look at Glenn’s stats recently, he probably hasn’t made as many runs as he would have liked as a pure batsman. Therefore for him to be in the side and as an all-rounder, he’s probably batting in that No.7 spot,” Australia captain Aaron Finch was quoted as saying after demoting Maxwell at Hobart.

There is no hiding to the fact that Maxwell can hit the long ball from the word go. Having said that, batting at No. 7 might be too low for him as he might remain as under-utilized by Australia.

Former Australia captain Allan Border expressed the same concerns in a recent interaction with Fox Sports. “It feels to me that he’s slightly wasted in that position,” Border said.

The 63-year old also added that he hoped to watch Maxwell batting up the order in the future. “Hopefully going forward he can be used as not a pinch-hitter but, depending on the circumstances of the game, you could throw him in at No. 3 if you had a good start for example,” he added.

In eight innings at No. 7, Maxwell has scored 198 runs at an average of 49.50 and a strike rate of 123.75. The most that he has batted is at No. 5. In 32 innings at the same position, Maxwell has scored 1,050 runs at an average of 33.87 and a strike rate of 122.52.
