Jonny Bairstow hit on helmet: England opener gets hit right on the helmet as Andre Russell bowls a bouncer during England vs Windies match

During the ongoing match No.19 of the 2019 Cricket World Cup between England and West Indies, the Cricket fraternity witnessed a rare mix of humour and pain on the 22-yard deck.

England are chasing a below par total of 212 which was posted by the Windies in the first innings after English skipper Eoin Morgan opted to field post winning the Toss.

Talking about the incident, it all happened during the 11^th over of the England innings which was being bowled by the Windies all-rounder Andre Russell. Russell bowled a vicious bouncer right onto the helmet of England opener Jonny Bairstow.

Bairstow had not anticipated the ball to climb upon him at such a pace. Thus, while he was initially looking to go for the ramp shot, the pace the delivery gathered off the deck, forced him to make that last millisecond change of mind to move away from the line of the ball. But, he was too late and the ball eventually hit his helmet’s grill and consequently also went down on the ground due to the blow.

Simultaneously, an already injured Russell too was down on his knees. It is difficult to say whether it happened because he had put in so much effort while delivering the ball, or was it the injury that got the better of him. But, Russell was clearly in significant pain which forced him to walk off the field along with his team physio.

Only Andre Russell could be involved in such a turn of events. He bowls a bouncer & hits Bairstow yet it is the bowler who leaves the field injured. Dre Russ has never been one for convention.. #ENGvsWI #CWC19

England start strong

England, on the other hand, have had the best possible start to the chase. It was the pair of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow that started the England innings as Jason Roy’s hamstring injury meant that he would not be able to bat before number 7.

At the time of writing England were in a comfortable position at 103/1 after 16 overs. Jonny Bairstow played an almost run-a-ball knock of 45 off 46 balls before getting out to Shannon Gabriel. Surprisingly, all-rounder Chris Woakes has come to bat at no.3 to join Root in the middle.
