Ander Herrera on captaincy: The Spanish midfielder opened up on taking on the captaincy at Manchester United.

Manchester United have been in fine form since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The side is on a nine-game unbeaten run, winning eight of them.

United dropped points for the first time under Solskjaer earlier this week against Burnley and will be up against Leicester City this weekend.

Various players have stepped up brilliantly under the Norwegian caretaker manager, one of them being Ander Herrera. The Spanish player has been efficient in the midfield for the side and secured his place as a regular starter under Solskjaer.

There have been calls from Manchester United’s fans to give the captain’s armband to Ander Herrera. While there has been no such indication from within the club, the midfielder finally broke silence on taking over the role.

Ander Herrera on captaincy:

The midfielder reflected on Manchester United’s surge in form in a conversation with ESPN.

“Ole had that click with some players that they are performing at their best,” Herrera said.

“He is getting the best from Rashford, he is getting the best from Paul, he is getting the best from Anthony, from Jesse. That’s not easy.”

He insisted that Solskjaer has successfully managed to get the ‘best from his best players,’.

“When you are a manager, we sometimes speak too much about tactics. But the most difficult thing for a manager is to get the best from his best players and this manager is doing it.

“We have all seen it.”

Ander Herrera talked about his opinion on taking over the captain’s armband as well, admitting that he has been piped to take over the role at Old Trafford in the future.

“I have been told a lot of times ‘you should wear the armband in the future’ but I don’t need it,” said the 29-year-old midfielder.

“I don’t go crazy with that. I think the best thing a team can have is different leaders. We need it from all the players.

“Of course I am very thankful to the fans that feel I can be the captain or the leader of the club but I honestly don’t think that we should have only one. I feel I could be a leader in some moments but I don’t think I am the only leader at the club.”

Earlier, Ander Herrera also spoke on his contract extension, where he stated that he was not concerned about the situation regarding his new deal.
