BBL 2019-20 to have IPL-style strategic timeout: A couple of important changes have been made to the Big Bash League’s rules.

The upcoming season of the Big Bash League will witness two major rule changes with respect to the super over and the inaugural strategic timeout.

With the ICC (International Cricket Council) making changes to the super over rules for knockout matches of the ICC tournaments, BBL will also follow the same rules. Therefore, in case of a tied super over in a knockout match, super overs will continue to happen until a clear winner is obtained.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the competition for our fans, players and clubs. The super over has been a discussion point globally after the ICC Cricket World Cup Final. We are pleased to have landed on a solution that provides teams and fans with a more satisfying outcome to a finals match,” Cricket Australia’s Head of Big Bash Leagues Alistair Dobson said on the changes to the playing conditions.

It is worth mentioning that teams will have to share points in case of a tied super over in a league match during the BBL 2019-20.

In what has come as a novel change to the tournament, this season will give the batsmen the option of selecting a 90-second strategic timeout between overs 7 and 13.

Unlike the Indian Premier League, an innings will have only one timeout which will always be decided by the batting team. “The Strategic Time Out has been thought about and developed over the last couple of years, with input from key stakeholders in the game.

“We’ve seen the strategic time outs used in other T20 competitions around the world, and we feel that providing the batting team with the power to call a time out will add an extra tactical dimension to the outcome of the game, with the priority of maximising runs,” Dobson said.
