BCCI threaten to break away from ICC if they cannot host 2021 CT and 2023 WC
In a shocking piece of news, BCCI are considering to break away from the ICC after the world cricketing body threatened to remove India’s hosting rights from the 2021 Champions Trophy and 2023 World Cup.
The relationship between ICC and BCCI is already strained, after last year’s farcical ruling in the Big Three Compensation model.
The BCCI stood to gain $570 million in the controversial Big Three Model. But this model was scrapped in favor of a new revenue sharing model in which the BCCI’s earnings were reduce to $290 million.
And in spite of the additional $100 million that the ICC offered BCCI, it does not look that an agreement is likely to be reached between the concerned parties.
The latest problem between the pair stems from the Government of India’s continued resistance over giving ICC a tax exemption for the Champions Trophy and World Cup that were scheduled to be held in India.
At the same time, Pakistan had offered to host the Champions Trophy, and assured the ICC that there will be problems from the Pakistan government.
The ICC has then warned India that they may have to remove their hosting rights, to which BCCI have countered by threatening to invoke the Members Participation Agreement (MPA).
A source close to the matter has said that should ICC take away the hosting rights from BCCI, India will pull out of all deals concerning with the world cricketing body.
“Should the ICC use tax exemptions from Indian government as an excuse to make up for their own losses and propose the shifting of tournaments, it will lead to a disaster. India will pull out of all agreements.
“This time, the BCCI will not flinch in invoking its rights through the MPA. India’s losses in those newly proposed ICC revenues don’t mean a thing. The proposed loss is not even enough to make up for what the BCCI earns through a single bilateral or two (Star pays Rs 43 crore per match according to the present contract and the renewed one is expected to fetch more in the new bidding). To make up for the rest of the world, you can’t take a tournament of this magnitude away from India.”
Lets’ hope calm heads prevail and this impending disaster could be avoided.
