Antonio Conte gets sent off

Antonio Conte’s arrival as the new Chelsea manager was met much fan fare last summer. The new Chelsea boss had come in with a sterling reputation as a coach for Juventus and the Italian national side.

His Juventus team created history as they dominated the Serie A during his time at the helm. He then took charge of the Italian national team that performed exceedingly well at last summer’s Euros.

But a less than impressive start cast doubts over his tenure. Something did not seem right as the nadir of the season was Chelsea’s 3-0 drubbing at Arsenal. Conte seemed disconsolate after the loss and Chelsea fans were worried that the season was not going yield any success.

But a change in formation and personnel, was the key as Chelsea collectively clicked into gear and never looked back.

Chelsea ran out as deserved champions and it took an impressive Arsenal performance in the FA Cup final to prevent a debut double for Conte.

For Chelsea fans, this summer’s transfer window has so far been a huge let down, as they have watched their rivals make marquee signings while their own team struggled to get their targets.

The Lukaku transfer fiasco was embarrassing, while their failure to get Morata has also been a major blow to their transfer plans.

Reports had emerged that Conte was considering his future at the club, as he did not feel that he was getting enough support from the top brass.

But Chelsea have managed to get Conte to sign an improved contract which will keep him at the club for two more years.

“The Chelsea fans have given me so much support since I arrived here one year ago and it is important we continue to succeed together,” added Conte, whose team has flown out to China and Singapore for pre-season games against the Gunners, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

This does not extend Conte’s stay at the club, but financially improves his contract.

That does seem telling isn’t it?
