Champions League awards 2018/19: UEFA release shortlist for Champions League 2018/19 player of the season. The awards will be given out to the best players of different positions.
UEFA have announced a 12-man shortlist that comprise of all the players that have qualified for the Champions League positional awards for the 2018/19 season. From the shortlist, they will honour the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward. The awards will be presented during the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday 29 August.

The Jury who picked the shortlist consisted of the coaches of all the 32 teams that took part in the group stages of the Champions League last season. The coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players. They were also joined by 55 journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations, chosen by the European Sports Media (ESM) group.

The players who received the most votes in their category are:
Goalkeepers: Alisson (Liverpool), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham), Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona).
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax, now Juventus), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool).
Midfielders: Frenkie de Jong (Ajax, now Barcelona), Christian Eriksen (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool).
Forwards: Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus).
Apart from the Positional awards, UEFA have also announced a shortlist for the UEFA Europa player of the season.
The nominees for this award are:
Olivier Giroud (France – Chelsea FC); Eden Hazard (Belgium – Chelsea FC, Real Madrid CF); Luka Jović (Serbia – Eintracht Frankfurt, now Real Madrid CF).
There will also be an award for the UEFA Men’s and Women’s player of the year awards at the ceremony. However, the three nominees will only be announced two weeks ahead of the event.
