The Liverpool fan added:
“Maldini was average physically, wasnt even that tall, but clearly had unbelievable reading of the game. VVD has unbelievable reading of the game but is also arguably the best aerial presence OAT and is fast to go with it

He then went on to compare Van Dijk to even more legendary centrebacks of the game:
“Every CB could have an attribute added to them. Terry wouldve liked more pace, Vidic wouldve liked to be able to know how to judge the flight of a ball behind him and play out from, Ramos has a red card issue. What would VVD actually want added to his game? 30 goals a season?”

Here’s how twitter reacted:
Naturally, there was mixed reaction to the thread. Some of the fans came out to support the argument for Van Dijk while several others came to defend the Italian maestro.
Simple- by the age VVD became a world class defender, Maldini was already considered an all time great player at his position. In addition Maldini also was world class as a left back and center back. This isn’t a knock on VVD, but Maldini has unheard of longevity

26 seasons, a world class player in two positions in a multiple CL winning , invincible league winning and world cup winning Maldini vs. CL and Scottish prem winner Van Dijk with 3 good seasons under his belt at 28

Ramos, puyol, lahm, varane(17/18), pique, chellini, Thiago Silva, Godin, Vidic, Terry, Kompany, etc at their prime were better than Van dijk but were never compared to maldini but Liverpool squad each player has been compared to a legend I like Liverpool but stop over hyping them

Don’t compare their careers baldy, compare them as individuals. VVD better in every single aspect and therefore is a better player

VVD is literally perfect there is no one better than him, it’s just not possible

Toughness, longevity, technique, leadership, stamina, offering in more areas of pitch. Did more for a worse team also (I know what the team was).
VD is in a big way about athleticism (not a slight at all, the opposite) and has only been this good for like a year tops. Won 1 pot

Nostalgia merchant tbh. Maldini would not live in today’s game. I respect that he was class in his day, but whilst VVD would COAST in those days, Maldini would never survive the higher pressing game of today
