3 Team Cricket South Africa: Ryan Rickelton affects MS Dhoni-like run-out to dismiss Reeza Hendricks in Solidarity Cup

Ryan Rickelton affects MS Dhoni-like run-out: Kites’ wicket-keeper didn’t let the team miss their captain in Quinton de Kock.

During the ongoing one-off match for the Solidarity Cup between Kites, Kingfishers and Eagles, Kites wicket-keeper batsman Ryan Rickelton emulated legendary India wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni to affect a run-out to dismiss Kingfishers captain Reeza Hendricks (20).

It all happened on the last delivery of the fifth over of Kingfishers’ first innings when Hendricks hit a Beauran Hendricks delivery on the off-side. With non-striker Janneman Malan (31) keen to return for a second run, Hendricks’ decision of responding well to the call saw him short of his crease at the striker’s end.

It was Kites captain Temba Bavuma who picked up the ball from the deep and threw it back to the wicket-keeper. While Bavuma’s pick-up was praiseworthy, his throw particularly wasn’t.

It was due to the same reason that Rickelton moved forward to collect the ball. However, due to a shortage of time to dismiss Hendricks, Rickelton threw the ball at the stumps in an archetype Dhoni-like manner.

Hendricks, who opened the batting with Malan, was announced to lead his team on the eve of the match. After fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the match, wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen was slated to lead Kingfishers.

Talking about Kites, Bavuma was named to lead the side after South Africa limited-overs captain Quinton de Kock made himself unavailable for this match due to personal reasons.
