Faf du Plessis 100 in IPL: How Many Centuries Has RCB Captain Scored in Indian Premier League?

Although not leading today, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis missed out on scoring a century in the Indian Premier League. Opening the batting alongside stand-in captain Virat Kohli (59) in IPL 2023 Match 27 in Mohali, du Plessis scored 84 (56) with the help of five fours and as many sixes.

It was on the seventh delivery that he faced that du Plessis hit Punjab Kings spinner Harpreet Brar (2/31) for a six over his head. In the same over, du Plessis followed it with another six over long-on to show first signs of aggression. The remaining two powerplay overs saw du Plessis hitting a boundary each off Nathan Ellis (1/41) and Sam Curran (0/27).

The right-handed batter’s next boundary also came via a six down the ground against Ellis only to follow it with a four each off Rahul Chahar (0/24) and Liam Livingstone (0/9). Nursing a minor rib injury, it was right before the halfway mark that he completed his second consecutive half-century to bolster lead in the list of highest IPL 2023 run-scorers.

Although both Kohli and du Plessis slowed down a lot in the middle overs, du Plessis tried to make amends by hitting sixes against Brar and Ellis post Kohli and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell‘s (0) dismissal in the same over.

With 16 balls remaining in the innings, du Plessis had a chance to touch the three-figure mark but it wasn’t to be as he hit an Ellis delivery straight to Curran at long-off.

Had the 38-year old player achieved a personal milestone at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium on a Thursday evening, it would have been a maiden IPL century for him.

It is quite astonishing that in spite of all his heroics in the biggest T20 league around the world, du Plessis is yet to score a century. For the unversed, du Plessis’ career-best IPL knock had come in a losing cause against the same opposition at the same venue four years ago.

Playing for Chennai Super Kings then, du Plessis had scored 96 (55) comprising 10 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 174.54.

As far as T20s are concerned, du Plessis has scored a total of five centuries for South Africa, St Lucia Kings (twice), Comilla Victorians and Joburg Super Kings.

Currently into his 11th IPL season, du Plessis has scored 3,746 runs across 115 innings at an average of 36.01 and a strike rate of 133.21. du Plessis, who has 29 IPL half-centuries under his belt, is the 16th highest (fifth highest among overseas cricketers) run-scorer in the competition.
