George Garton cricket: England make five changes to ODI squad for Sri Lanka series

George Garton: England have named an uncapped fast bowler in their 16-member squad for a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

England have named a 16-member squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting from June 29 in Durham.

As many as five changes have been made to the squad which had last represented England in the format on the tour of India earlier this year. While Dawid Malan and Matt Parkinson have been left out, all-rounder Ben Stokes and fast bowler Reece Topley have missed out on selection due to respective injuries.

“Several players are not available for selection due to injury. Jofra Archer [right elbow], Saqib Mahmood [abdominal] and Reece Topley [side strain] are all missing, but continue to make excellent progress from their respective injuries,” England head coach Chris Silverwood said in a statement.

Batsman Joe Root, all-rounder Liam Dawson and fast bowlers Chris Woakes and David Willey have returned to the ODI squad. While Root had last played an ODI during the home series against Australia in September, Dawson’s last ODI appearance had come during the tour of Sri Lanka in 2018.

Woakes and Willey, who have also earned T20I comebacks for the series against Sri Lanka, had last played in the ODI format against Australia last year and against Pakistan in 2019 respectively.

Who is George Garton?

England have also handed a maiden call-up to Sussex fast bowler George Garton. In 24 List A matches, the 24-year old player has picked 29 wickets at an average of 34.24, an economy rate of 6.32 and a strike rate of 32.40.

“We have been monitoring the progress of George Garton for quite some time. He has been a significant part of Sussex’s bowling unit in white-ball cricket for an extended period. His ability to bowl quick with his point of difference being a left-armer certainly gives us options in this series, and he deserves his chance at this level,” Silverwood said about Garton.

In four matches of the ongoing County Championship 2021, Garton has picked eight wickets at an average of 8.37, an economy rate of 5.15 and a strike rate of 9.7. In the last year’s Royal London Cup, Garton had picked nine wickets at 29.66, 5.93 and 30 respectively.
