Australian captain Steve Waugh took a tough decision in the 1999 test series between Australia and West Indies where he decided to drop Shane Warne for the 4th test of the series. Australia were trailing 2-1 in the series, and the last match was a do-or-die one for them.
Warne had his shoulder surgery earlier, and he was struggling a lot to find his rhythm, where he scalped just a couple of wickets in the initial 3 tests. Waugh took a tough step to drop Warne out of the last test, and Australia won the last match by 176 runs to level the series. Waugh acknowledged that he would have got a lot of hate had Australia lost that last match.
Brian Lara reveals Shane Warne was frustrated when Steve Waugh dropped him
Brian Lara is doing commentary for Fox Cricket in the ongoing 1st test between Australia and West Indies in Perth. Lara gave an interview to Fox Cricket ahead of the match, where he also talked about the late Shane Warne. Lara said that he had a good friendly relationship with Warne, and they understood each other.
He also recalled the controversial 1999 Australia vs West Indies test series in which Steve Waugh dropped Shane Warne for the final test. Lara revealed that Warne was not happy with Waugh’s decision, and even he said that dropping a bowler like Warne was not expected by anyone.
“He wasn’t very happy during that time,” Lara recalled to foxsports.com.au.
“But can you imagine preferring a spinner to Shane Warne? I mean, that’s unheard of. I remember the emotions he went through during that period.”
In his book “No Spin”, Warne talked about the same incident and called Waugh ‘one of the most selfish cricketers’. Warne said that the selectors and coach wanted him to play the last test, but Waugh dropped him. It is to be noted that Warne was the vice-captain of the team in that series.
