How Many Times Has Virat Kohli Been Run Out In Test Cricket?

The second day of the second Test of India’s tour of West Indies 2023 in Port of Spain was witness to only the third instance of former captain Virat Kohli (121) getting run out in a Test match. Interestingly, it is the first time when Kohli has been run out outside of an Adelaide Test.

Kohli, whose fitness is an epitome for the cricketing fraternity, seldom falls short of his crease especially in a format where there isn’t an urgency per se of participating in risky singles or doubles.

That being said, Kohli erred on part of his own judgement which led to his dismissal at the Queen’s Park Oval today. It all happened on the second delivery of the 99th over when Kohli inside edged a Jomel Warrican delivery towards Alzarri Joseph at square leg. Interested in sneaking a quick run, Kohli received a positive initial response from all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (61).

However, a slight hesitation doubting his own instinct led to Kohli’s dismissal as Joseph nailed a direct hit at the non-striker’s end. Readers must not that the 34-year old player walked back to the pavilion via this mode of dismissal for the first time after scoring a Test century.

Having happened more than a decade ago, the first-ever instance of Kohli getting run out in this format was also a consequence of his own mistake. The second, however, was made possible due to vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane‘s disastrous calling at the same venue.

Having played 500 matches across formats for India now, it is to be noted that Kohli has been run out 12 and six times in ODIs and T20Is respectively. While he was out in this mode in the shortest format last year, he hasn’t been run out in an ODI since 2018.

The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
