The last time when India had won an ICC (International Cricket Council) trophy was almost a decade ago. In what was the fifth instance of the senior Indian mean’s team winning an ICC tournament, it had come in the form of their second (co-winner with Sri Lanka in 2002 the first time) ICC Champions Trophy title victory in 2013.

A rain-affected match witnessing a swift turn of events in the business end had made the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the first captain in the history of cricket to have won all the three premier white-ball tournaments also including ICC Cricket World Cup and ICC World Twenty20 (known as ICC T20 World Cup now).
Dhoni, who had infused a sense of belief among his teammates before lifting the title at Edgbaston, was the captain during the next three ICC events as well. However, he couldn’t add to his already filled cabinet of trophies from international cricket.
Former India captain Virat Kohli, Dhoni’s successor, has been the captain a maximum of four times out of these nine occasions where India have failed to register a title win. Additionally, Kohli also has an infamous distinction of being the only captain to have not led India to the knockouts of an ICC tournament in all these years.

Has Rohit Sharma Won ICC Trophies As Captain? (Updated)
Rohit Sharma, who has superseded Kohli as the captain of the national team across formats, has also led India to the knockout stage of an ICC event thrice now. Even though he has won as many as five Indian Premier League titles with Mumbai Indians, Sharma is yet to replicate the same success in international cricket.
Taking into consideration how BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) doesn’t miss an opportunity of flexing their financial muscle at a global stage, it is high time that their players secure a title victory in any of the prestigious aforementioned tournaments. Winning ICC T20 World Cup 2024 away from home wouldn’t be a bad start!
