Eoin Morgan responds to Kevin Pietersen's tweet about him being scared of Mitchell Starc

What began as the dream tournament for the home side as they went about pummelling teams to record three consecutive wins has taken on time in going on a downward spiral. Having lost two games on the bounce against Sri Lanka and Australia, England’s misdemeanour sees them staring at the possibility of a potential exit from the running in of a semi-final spot.

Still to play India and New Zealand, England’s predicament has only been self born. The hosts have opted to chase four times till now, going onto lose three out of those four encounters. The glaring weaknesses in the team’s gameplan have been massively exposed with the side losing all composure and semblance when asked to come out and bat first.

Coming under massive flak for their jittery performances, the team have been hit out at from all quarters with supporters, experts and ex-cricketers questioning the side for their woeful showings with the bat. And one such detractor is ex-cricketer Kevin Pietersen, someone who has taken to Twitter several times this World Cup to comment over his country’s showings at the World Cup.

English captain Eoin Morgan had been at the receiving end of Pietersen’s recent comments after he questioned Morgan over his weakness while facing Starc. In a tweet by Pietersen, the cricketer claimed that Morgan’s shuffling in his crease and moving to the square leg as the pacer came into bowl at him exposed Morgan’s tepid nature while encountering the bowler Slamming Morgan as being too scared, Pietersen said he had not seen an English captain display such a weakness in a long time.

Known for his quirky interviews and replies, the England captain was quick to respond to respond to Pietersen in his own manner. On being informed of Pietersen’s claims at the interaction with media houses proceeding the encounter, Morgan’s reply was a short one but a clear jibe at Pietersen as he went onto say, “Really, excellent”.

He also differed with Pietersen’s views and said that he wasn’t scared to the slightest when facing Starc.

Starc who ended the match with figures of 4-43 had sent Morgan packing back cheaply for just the 4 runs after he induced a false shot from the English captain who holed out the ball as far as Pat Cummins. In what was a tatters of a chase by England, the home side were defeated by 64 runs after Australia bowled them out for 221 runs in their pursuit of 285.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Morgan come out with such replies though with the English captain refusing to ask the English supporters to refrain from calling David Warner and Steve Smith a cheat. Earlier in the tournament when asked about Jofra Archer being a surprise package, he had gone onto quip that Sri Lanka with 6 new players in their unit were a bigger surprise than Archer.

Elsewhere Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan have been heavily blasted on Twitter after their loud claims of England decimating Sri Lanka and Australia and walking away with the World Cup trophy. Now in a precarious situation of needing to defeat atleast India or New Zealand to assure themselves of qualification, England are in a sticky situation with sides from fifth to seventh continually snapping at their heels.
