A Month After Claiming Aston Martin Will Never Be Outside Podium, Helpless Fernando Alonso Accepts His Limitations

Fernando Alonso had quite an underwhelming Qualifying session at Spa as he managed to put his car on P9 for the race starts on Sunday, one spot ahead of his teammate. With Aston Martin’s pace having dropped considerably, Alonso, while speaking to DAZN, has tracked back on his words after the Spanish GP a month ago.

Aston Martin had a brilliant start to the season, with Alonso claiming podiums in almost every other race. After finishing P7 in Spain, Alonso vowed it would be his last race without a podium. He did manage to finish P2 at the next race in Canada but failed to make it to the top 3 in every race after that.

The Belgian GP Qualifying was almost a repeat of the last two races. Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari were much faster than Aston Martin. Therefore, Alonso had to settle behind all of them in P9. With how things seem right now, Alonso will most probably have to settle with single-digit points on Sunday.

Fernando Alonso admits that his rivals performed better

Fernando Alonso was showing a pretty good pace during the start of the Qualifying session. However, the pace fell away once the track dried up, and everyone got on to the slick tires. Following the session, Alonso admitted and accepted the limitations of his AMR23.

Talking to DAZN after the session, as reported by Motor.es, Alonso said, “The rivals are strong and ninth and tenth, I suppose it is the most we could do today.

Alonso then explained that the Qualifying session was even more difficult because of the changing conditions. According to the Spaniard, he gained three to four seconds per flying lap during the crossover period between wet and dry.

However, even after giving it their all, the car was not fast enough to be on equal terms with the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, and Alonso knows that very well.

Aston Martin lost their footing after Canada

The recent slump that Aston Martin finds itself in would worry owner Lawrence Stroll a lot. The Canadian Billionaire has left no stone unturned to ensure the Silverstone outfit can reach the front of the grid. And even though it seemed like a possibility at the start of the season, it’s a distant dream as of now.

Teams like McLaren and Mercedes have beaten Aston Martin in the development race; they have developed their cars much faster than Aston. This is why McLaren, a team that had finished dead last in Bahrain, found their cars fighting for podiums by the middle of the season.

Aston Martin would have to put their heads down and start developing the car. As of now, the team has announced that they are already working on major upgrades. Whether it will help them find their lost footing remains to be seen.
