Callum Ilott stats 2020: What made Ferrari hire him as reserve driver in 2021?

Callum Ilott stats 2020: The Formula 2 2020 runner-up boasts an incredible CV, which led Ferrari to promote him as a reserve driver.

Last year, Formula 2 wasn’t all about Mick Schumacher’s title reign; along with him, his Ferrar Driver Academy mate Callum Ilott was also kept under the radar.

He constantly challenged for the F2 title, but in the end, conceded the defeat against the German during the last part of the competition. It was rumoured that whoever between Schumacher and Ilott would win the title will grab the Haas seat, and that is what happened.

The 22-year-old race driver was constantly tipped to have an F1 seat in 2021, but Ferrari’s sister team Alfa Romeo decided to stick with the current lineup of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Whereas Haas preferred to give the other vacant seat to Nikita Mazepin. Thus, Ferrari failed to give him a starting spot this season. Shame when out of three F2 graduates being promoted to F1 this year, the runner-up couldn’t find a team.

On the other hand, At the end of 2020, Ilott also revealed that he doesn’t have the resources and backing to continue in F2 for another year. Therefore, in the end, Ferrari decided to hire him as the reserve driver in 2021.

Alongside, Ilott will compete in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, something new for him, as he has never before driven a GT car in his life until his try out with 488 GT3 at Mugello in late February.
