Former Teammate Calls Out Carlos Sainz For Rocking a "Mother-in-law" Haircut

Carlos Sainz is known for a lot of things. From being an all-round driver who can excellently navigate the tight midfield to putt the tee in golf, the Ferrari driver has a good reputation in the F1 paddock.

But that’s not the same with his hairstyles. The Spaniard used to have an unruly and wavy hairstyle during his early F1 days in Toro Rosso and Renault.

However, since then he has shifted to a very clean, corporate hairstyle which he has been rocking since his McLaren days. Sainz might be one of the prettiest drivers in the grid. However, that does not stop his former teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, from poking some fun at him.

Niko Hulkenberg describes Sainz’s haircut

Sainz and Hulkenberg were teammates at Renault from 2017 to 2018. The Spaniard joined Renault from Toro Rosso ahead of the 2017 United States Grand Prix as a replacement for Jolyon Palmer.

Hulkenberg and Sainz were good friends at Renault. However, the Spaniard claims he wasn’t a favorite of the media because they found Hulkenberg too attractive which Sainz revealed at the 2019 Japanese GP.

While the two were on their media duties, the Spaniard joked, “I think they like Blonde people.” Hulkenberg agreed with his former teammate saying “That’s very true,” and called himself beautiful in Sainz’s native tongue.

This is probably why the Ferrari driver decided to grow a beard after joining McLaren in 2019. Sainz added, “That’s why I have been growing a beard to be special over here.”

Hulkenberg even referred to Sainz’s hairdo as a “Mother-in-law” haircut. However, the German claimed he was looking good and possibly a couple of years younger. Sainz reverted to the German driver’s banter saying, “I always try to look nice, you know since I joined McLaren.”

Sainz regards Hulkenberg as one of the fastest he has raced against

After the 2019 season, Hulkenberg was dropped by Renault. The German driver finished 14th with just 37 points and was replaced with Ocon for the forthcoming season. However, Sainz continued to praise his former teammate.

Sainz claimed the German was a fantastic athlete and one of the best racers he had seen. The Spaniard claimed that had it been a matter of just speed and talent, Hulkenberg should have been able to retain his seat with ease.

Hulkenberg was without a racing seat for 3 seasons between 2020-2022. The Germans filled in for Stroll and Perez in 2020 and Vettel in 2022 when the following drivers were ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.

Hulkenberg finally returned to the F1 grid as a full-time driver in 2023 with Haas. The driver holds the record for the most race starts without a podium finish in F1.
