“I hope he stays with us" - AlphaTauri hoping Pierre Gasly to Alpine does not materialise

“I hope he stays with us” – AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost considers Pierre Gasly to be one of the best on the current grid and hopes he sticks with them next season, amidst Alpine speculation.

Pierre Gasly has been impressive for AlphaTauri after his struggles with sister team Red Bull. And he has led from the front this season, grabbing an impressive podium at Baku last weekend.

His boss Franz Tost is a big fan of the Frenchman, calling him “one of the absolute top drivers”, speaking to the Dutch edition of Motorsport.com.

“That third place [at Baku] was very important for him and for his self-confidence.

“Pierre has always done well [this season], but we couldn’t offer him a really good car in Portimao and also a little bit in Barcelona, but in Monaco and in Baku we hit back.

“He’s there, and he’s one of the absolute top drivers for me, because he gets the most out of the car, makes no mistakes, and brings points home.”

Pierre Gasly to Alpine?

There is intense speculation linking Gasly to French team Alpine, to replace compatriot Esteban Ocon and line up alongside former champ Fernando Alonso. Tost doesn’t want this to happen, despite admitting Red Bull and Helmut Marko will ultimately call the shots when it comes to the driver seats.

“I hope he stays with us.

“Now, with the cost cap, we have to see if we can give him a decent and competitive car. And then there’s no reason [for him] to change [teams].

“Anyway, it’s Red Bull’s decision, who drives.”
