“I like to think that we’re more boxing” – Aston Martin boss Otmar Szafnauer craves for more open battles between Mercedes and Red Bull
“I like to think that we’re more boxing” – Otmar Szafnauer also cannot wait to join in the banter between Christian Horner and Toto Wolff.
Aston Martin have huge ambitions from their F1 comeback, something stated countless times by promoter Lawrence Stroll. This would mean they would get into the brawling mix of Red Bull and Mercedes, something team principal Otmar Szafnauer is craving for.
“I relish the opportunity. I wish we could be up there and if I had to have that banter, I relish that opportunity.”

Fans loving see-saw battle between Mercedes and Red Bull
Szafnauer also added his opinion on the competition taking place between Red Bull and Mercedes for the title. He has spoken to multiple fans – like a good team boss should – and like them, are enjoying the thrill of not knowing who will win the race.
“I think from a fan’s perspective, because I speak to fans often, they find the intrigue in not knowing who’s going to win the championship ultimately, not knowing week to week who’s going to win the battle, they find that entertaining. When I talk to fans, because they ask me my opinion often and I ask them, yes, they tend to find it entertaining.
“I’m more of a purist. I like to think that we’re more boxing, but whatever, that’s me. Although I’m also a fan, I’m more of a professional within the sport than a fan.”
The hybrid era has seen Mercedes dominate almost day in, day out, so it has been refreshing to see Red Bull pack a punch this time around. Add to that a struggling Esteban Ocon unexpectedly winning a race, and we have a finely poised second half of the season waiting!
