"I'm out of it, for sure" - Lewis Hamilton gives up fighting for the 2022 championship after disappointing results in Imola

Lewis Hamilton says he is out of the 2022 championship after he could only manage to finish P14 in Imola on Sunday.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton made a good start in the Emilia Romagna GP on Sunday after qualifying P14 in the sprint race. He overtook the cars in front of him soon enough to gain three places. But after the disappointing result of the race, Hamilton says that he is out of the championship.

While he was battling for P10 to gain at least one point for his team, a lot of bad luck crashed onto him and prevented him from doing so.

The Briton was called in for a pit stop and that went bad as there was a slight delay by the crew. A slow pit stop followed by an unsafe incident with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon in the pitlane dropped the Mercedes driver back to P14.

Ocon made an unsafe release while he was exiting from the pitlane and slightly touched Hamilton’s W13. The Frenchman was handed over a five seconds time penalty.

In the aftermath of the incident, the seven-time world champion struggled throughout the race to overtake Pierre Gasly but failed. He finished the race at P13.

Meanwhile his teammate, George Russell had a pretty good race as he finished P4.

Lewis Hamilton wants to forget the Imola weekend

After the disappointing results of the Emilia Romagna GP, Hamilton told Sky Sports, “A weekend to forget, that’s for sure.”

Before the race Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff had stated that the Brackley-based team were not out of the 2022 championship yet. However, Hamilton differed from his team boss based on his personal position so far.

The 37-year-old said, “I’m out of it, for sure. There’s no question about that, but I’ll still keep working as hard as I can to try and somehow pull it back together somehow.”
