Mercedes Mock Haas After Mick Schumacher Takes a Drive in His Father's 12-Year-Old Car

Mick Schumacher recently took his father Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes W02 out for a drive at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex. As the German star got the opportunity to drive what his father drove 12 years ago, the Mercedes AMG F1 team’s Twitter admin didn’t miss out on the opportunity to take a dig at Mick’s former employer Haas.

At the end of the 2022 season, the American team asked Schumacher to stop performing donuts in what was interestingly his last race for the team. Schumacher’s race engineer told him: “Sorry Mick. Can you stop these donuts please, seriously? I’m sorry Mick. But we just can’t. Sorry.”

Following this, Schumacher had a heartbreaking response for his team on the radio. He replied, “That’s alright. Love you too.” It seems as though Toto Wolff and Mercedes haven’t forgotten about this sad moment, as they showed after Schumacher’s recent running the Goodwood Festival.

Mick Schumacher, donuts and digs

Mick Schumacher took his father’s 2011 Mercedes car out for a spin and performed donuts during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Following that, the Silver Arrows posted a picture of him performing these donuts, and put up a caption asking him to do what Haas didn’t allow him.

After posting the image, the admin wrote, “Okay, Mick you can do the donuts now.” Interestingly, the Haas social media admin understood the slight attack and replied back to the comment section with a ‘blank face’ emoji.

At the end of the 2022 campaign, the Kannapolis-based team decided to part ways with Schumacher after two years. They brought back Nico Hulkenberg to replace him. However, Toto Wolff took the young German under his wing and offered him a reserve role at Mercedes.

Why did Schumacher face a brutal fate?

Apart from his poor run of forms, there were multiple reasons why Mick Schumacher was laid off by Haas. Firstly, he left the Ferrari Driver Academy, which gave Haas the autonomy to fully control Schumacher’s future at the team.

And secondly, there were multiple crashes which in the end proved very costly for the team that was already running on a constrained budget. His failure to match Kevin Magnussen too, was seen as inexcusable by team boss Guenther Steiner, who felt that Haas lost out on many points because of the 24-year-old.

All in all, Schumacher’s Haas exit was ugly and certainly took a hit to his confidence. However, with Mercedes, he is currently getting to learn from the likes of Hamilton and Russell. It’ll be interesting to see if Wolff and Mercedes can help Schumacher sort his future out in the future or not.
