Sebastian Vettel to Aston Martin

Sebastian Vettel to Aston Martin seems to be a done deal, if rumors are to be believed. However, Will Buxton explains why it wouldn’t happen.

The Sebastian Vettel to Aston Martin move may finally be reaching its conclusion. This comes after reports from Germany confirmed that the 4 time F1 World champion will be racing for Aston Martin in 2021.

This could potentially mean Sergio Perez’s departure from the Racing Point/Aston Martin outfit.  The Mexican driver has a long-term contract with them, but it can be voided if the exit clause is activated before July 31.

This looks like a likely scenario because his teammate Lance Stroll is Lawrence Stroll’s son, the main investor of Aston Martin. Lawrence effectively calls the shots in the team, and has his mind set to bring in the legendary German.

Will Buxton, F1’s Digital Presenter, on the other hand, believes it will be Lance to make way for Vettel or maybe the deal will not go through at all.

According to his Twitter thread, Perez is indispensable to the Racing Point/Aston Martin team. He goes on to point out that Perez has a long-term contract, and brings in a lot of sponsor money. Both are crucial financial elements for Aston Martin, a team aspiring for race wins in the near future. Add to that the fact he has been a consistently strong performer since Racing Point’s earlier Force India avatar.

Buxton also adds that a line-up of Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez would be an enviable one, calling it an “absolute knockout”. However, with Lawrence’s son, Lance stroll in the mix, will the Aston Martin F1 owner choose business over family relations?

Sergio Perez or Lance Stroll to make way?

A shrewd businessman would, but then Lance Stroll is young and could have a bright future in the sport. It’s a tough choice but one that could make or break Aston Martin in the years to come.

F1 fans across the board would be waiting for Racing Point Team Principal’s presser on Friday, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.  Otmar Szafnauer had earlier expressed Aston Martin’s interest to being in Sebastian Vettel.

It would be interesting to note what Otmar has to say about it now, when the rumor mill is going overboard. If he indeed hints or confirms it would be Perez to make way, expect the Mexican to be in a not-so-good mood throughout the weekend.
