“Team comes first" - Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto on the importance of the Constructors Championship

“Team comes first” – Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto speaks out on the importance of the Constructors Championship vis-a-vis the intra-team rivalry between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Ferrari 2021 car, Mattia Binotto underlined the importance of the Constructors Championship. He made a fair point of how the team needs to grow first for the drivers to be able to challenge each other on the track. Considering Ferrari’s last season, both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc should be more than happy to help each other via team orders.

“Team comes first. There’s not a single individual who counts more than the team. It’s something of which we are all aware. Something we have discussed altogether is that to be World Champions, first we need to beat the other cars and the other drivers.

“Only by the time that eventually we are the fastest car, and we have the fastest drivers on track, we may fight between them. It’s really being focused on trying to progress as a team. It’s really about trying to progress as a team – and the team also includes the drivers – and I think that comes from transparency, from trust.

“Certainly, it is important to score points for the team, in the constructors’ standings. Both drivers know that. For us it is certainly important that they both do their best because the sum of the two points for the drivers is essential for the constructors at the end of the season.”

Ferrari finished P6 last season, not where they would expect to be, being the most successful team ever. With the playing field more competitive this season, the Maranello-based team would do great to somehow make it to the Top 3, finishing as the best of the rest.
