"They still have something up their sleeve"– Nico Hulkenberg on Mercedes' title contention against "faster" Red Bull

“They still have something up their sleeve”– Nico Hulkenberg claims Red Bull is currently faster than Mercedes, but the latter may have surprises.

Mercedes’ reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg is not hopeless about his team’s contention for this year’s championship contention, even though he believes Red bull is faster.

The Silver Arrows are 44 points behind Red Bull in the championship, with more than half the season left to go; the German driver thinks Mercedes can’t be written off.

“It’s straightforward,” Hulkenberg told RTL. “Red Bull currently has the fastest car. The roles have been reversed compared to previous years. Red Bull has lost less time during the winter due to the rule changes than Mercedes. That’s why they’re ahead of them now.

“It’s not over yet. I definitely wouldn’t write Mercedes off yet. They still have something up their sleeve, especially in terms of the updates and improvements to their car.”

Max Verstappen will fight for more titles.

Hulkenberg is mightily impressed by Max Verstappen’s efforts this year, who is currently leading the championship race with 32 points. The former Renault driver believes that the Dutchman will be competing for many titles in future.

“Max will fight for many Formula 1 world titles during his career,” said Hulkenberg. “At the moment he is surfing a nice wave of success, he is super confident and confident in his car too.”

Verstappen in the last five races has won four races, which has not only allowed to clear off the initial deficit obtained from Hamilton earlier this year but also became the favourite to win the championship.

However, as it has been repeatedly emphasised, the title is far from being over, with both Red Bull and Mercedes are separated with the tiniest of margins, and that title wave can anytime change its course.
