Gautam Gambhir opines MS Dhoni as India’s best captain only as per statistics; reckons there have been better captains than him in the past

Cricketer turned Member of Parliament, Gautam Gambhir is known for coming up with bold comments and not mincing with his words whenever he opens up on a topic, whether related to Cricket or not.
Just a few days ago before the 2019 World Cup knock-out stages, he had criticised Virat Kohli by terming him a success as captain only because he has the services of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the team.

Yet again during an interaction with the news channel, TV9, he was of the view that MS Dhoni might be the best Indian captain going by the stats, but that does not mean the captains before him were mere not good at all.
“If you see the statistics, then he (Dhoni) is the best captain. But that doesn’t mean that other captains have done badly. Sourav Ganguly has done good captaincy; we have won outside under him. Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, we have won ODI series in South Africa and Test series in Australia”, Gambhir opined.
Not fair to give the captain all the share for team’s success
Gambhir attested to the fact that it was under Dhoni’s leadership that Team India won the 2007 (T20) and 2011 World Cups. But, that does not mean that other captains have been poor.
It is true that MS Dhoni has won us two World Cups (2007 and 2011) but it is not fair to give all credit to the captain for success and criticise only him when it doesn’t go your way. Dhoni has won the Champions Trophy and World Cups but other captains have also taken India forward. Captains like Anil Kumble have done the job though not for long; Rahul Dravid also led India to win in England,” he said.
However, the BJP Member of Parliament also maintained that Dhoni will be considered the best if one is only judged in terms of winning the World Cup.
