Gerard Pique’s future at Barcelona is in question as the club is increasingly worried about footballer’s off-the-pitch behavior.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique faces trouble over his Barca future due to his off-the-field behavior. Pique was recently caught driving without a point in his driving license, and will reportedly be summoned for trial. In Spanish law, driving without points on the license is considered a criminal offence.
And now, according to Spanish outlet Sport, the Barcelona hierarchy believes that Pique’s reckless behavior might be damaging to club’s image.
Gerard Pique featured in a two-part documentary with Antoine Griezmann over latter’s transfer speculation in June, which hasn’t gone down well with Barcelona. Sport also reveals that the issue is of significance to Barcelona as Pique is a part of the quartet of Barca’s first-team captains, alongside Messi, Busquets and Sergi Roberto.
The club ‘believes’ that Pique is making a lot of headlines for reasons unrelated to football. His involvement in poker tournaments has also caused discomfort for the Barca board.
According to Sport, Gerard Pique could be accused by a criminal route as the player was notified that he had run out of points in the driver’s license.
The board had earlier expressed its discomfort over Pique’s involvement in Griezmann’s documentary – a player who said ‘no’ to Barcelona’s offer.
“The intervention of Pique in this case [Griezmann] has generated sadness and discomfort in the club, we will talk to him as soon as he returns from the World Cup,” Barcelona’s manager Ernesto Valverde said at that time. However, Pique was later let off without a fine.
Valverde later stated in one of the press conferences that he has received assurance from Pique that his off-the-field issues won’t impact his performances.
Sport reports that the club’s major concern is the damage Pique could possibly inflict on its image, as he is one of the most recognized players of the first team.
